Aromatherapy for athletes
The
secret to success?
You’ve
probably heard of aromatherapy: the use of fragrances from herbs
as a form of alternative medicine and healing for the body and
soul. But did you know that there are specific oils from herbs
that have added benefits for physically active people?
Fragrance
oils have been used for thousand of years to lubricate the skin,
purify infectious air and repel insects. Early Greek and Roman
Olympic athletes rubbed these oils on their skin before and after
competition to prepare and massage muscles. In the late 1930s, a
French chemist dipped his burned hand into a container of lavender
and the pain and redness disappeared quickly.
Aromatherapy
surged in the 1980s with the popularity of "natural,"
non-toxic healing methods that cost less than conventional
medications and produced fewer side effects. Practitioners
insisted aromas could heal wounds, stimulate the immune system,
cure skin disorders, improve circulation, relieve pain, reduce
swelling and even improve memory.
Advocates
say fragrances influence mind over body as they stimulate
odor-sensing nerves that result in impulses sent throughout the
body. These responses exert an effect on the body. Aromatherapy
blends well with sports psychology by helping put athletes in the
right state of mind.
"Everything
may be in order physiologically for the athlete, but if the mind
is not straight, the athlete will not perform optimally,"
said sport psychologist Terry Orlick in the book, "The
Ergogenics Edge."
AthleteGift
has looked at those responses that have been found to help active
people energize, relax, recover and rejuvenate; and then researched
manufacturers who are on to this trend. Here's those key
ingredients, how they help, and the products sold here that
contain them:

Before
you use aromatherapy
Use a
small dose of any fragrance oil product to make sure you are not
oversensitive to it. It is recommended those with asthma consult
their doctor before using.
Those
with skin allergies should test a small drop on the inside of the
elbow and wait 24 hours to see if a reaction occurs. Avoid
aromatherapy during pregnancy. Infants and young children are
especially sensitive so keep away from their faces. Do not use
peppermint on children under the age of 30 months.
Because
every "body" is different, we offer a money-back
guarantee if there is a problem with using a product.
The
end result
In an
age where sport competitions are won or lost by mere hundredths of
a second, an athlete's motivation and state of mind are key
determinants of success. And the research has found that scent has
an important role in sports training. We strive to offer products
that will help you boost your performance and recovery. Please let
us know your results.
